Phonics and Spelling
Learn to read and spell simple words with the following letter patterns: ai, ee, y, oa, oo, oi, ou, ir, or ar.
Grammar and Punctuation
Begin to use full stops and capital letters correctly in independent writing.
Comprehension and Composition
Read and write recounts of events and
visits.
Learn about story settings.
Understand how non fiction books are
organised and use them to answer simple questions.
Read and write poetry on similar themes.
Year 2
Phonics and Spelling
Consolidate spelling patterns taught during the Autumn and Spring terms.
Learn about synonyms (words that have very similar meanings) and common suffixes eg. _ly, _ful
Grammar and Punctuation
Read aloud with expression.
Use basic sentence punctuation correctly
(? ! .) and commas in lists.
Read and write book reviews.
Compare books by the same author.
Write sustained stories.
Use non fiction books effectively for simple research.
Write reports on topics of interest.
Write instructions.
