Reading Targets

For each colour band of the reading scheme you will see a listing of the skills required for that band.  The teachers will be looking for the child to be confident in the use of these skills before moving them to a new band.

 

Pink Level

 

·       Is able to find the title of the book.

·       Is able to open the front cover appropriately.

·       Is able to turn pages appropriately.

·       Knows that the left page comes before the right.

·       Knows that we read from left to right.

·       Can use their finger to follow the words as they are spoken.

·       Can find simple words in their book.

·       Can retell the story.

·       Can use patterns in the text e.g. rhyme

·       Can predict what will happen.

 

Red Level

 

·       Is able to find and recall the title.

·       Is confident with matching their finger to the word as they read.

·       Is able to use words that they know in the story.

·       Is beginning to flow as they are reading.

·       Is beginning to self correct and check their reading.

·       Is beginning to make predictions from the story to solve new words.  

 

Yellow  Level

 

·       Can read with just their eyes, only needing to use the finger for more difficult words.

·       Is beginning to use the punctuation in their reading.

·       Is able to use the pictures, context and sounds to check reading makes sense.

·       Is recognising clusters of letter and familiar words to read unknown words e.g. look and took

·       Is able to look for information in the text to give them clues to read unfamiliar words.

 

Blue Level

 

·       Is able to flow through the text developing an understanding of the book.

·       Is able to self correct on the run

·       Is able to re read to clarify meaning of the phrase or passage.

·       Is able to solve new words by using a range of strategies eg changing the first vowel to its name, chunking sounds etc

·       Is able to use what they already know about words to solve new ones eg play – played – playing

·       Is able to read a wider variety of text.

·       Is able to talk about the book showing precise understanding.

 

Green Level

 

·       Is able to read fluently with attention to punctuation

·       Is able to solve new words from the context of the sentence or passage.

·       Is able to read pages with more lines on a page without getting lost.

·       Is able to read a wider variety of text.

     ·       Is able to discuss the character.

·       Is able to discuss the plot.

 

Orange Level

 

·       Is able to read without relying on the illustrations.

·       Is able to read longer and more complex sentences.

·       Is able to respond to a range punctuation in their reading.

·       Is able to cross check information on the run eg does it make sense

·       Is able to read fluently with attention to punctuation.

     ·       Infer meaning form the text. Eg why do you think that?

·       Is able to search for and use familiar syllables within words to read longer words.  

 

Turquoise Level

 

·       Is able to extract meaning from the text without relying on the illustrations.

·       Is able to read different genres with confidence.

·       Is able to use punctuation to read with greater expression.

·       Is able to read longer sentences and paragraphs.

·       Is able to attempt more difficult words.

 

Purple Level

 

·       Is able to read a variety of text independently.

·       To make predictions about the layout, story development.

·       Is able to read silently at a more rapid pace.

·       Is able to take note of punctuation.

     ·       Is able to solve more unfamiliar words on the run.

·       Is able to adapt their reading to the variety of texts eg poetry, non fiction.

·       Is beginning to recognise effects used by authors eg descriptive language, openings, cliff hangers, characters descriptions.

·       Is beginning to borrow bits from books and use it in their writing.

 

Gold Level

 

·       Is able to read a wider variety of text independently.

·       Is able to make precise predictions about the layout, story development.

·       Is able to read silently at a more rapid pace.

·       Is able to take note of punctuation.

·       Is able to solve unfamiliar words on the run.

·       Is able to adapt their reading to the variety of texts eg poetry, non fiction.

·       Is beginning to recognise effects used by authors eg descriptive language, openings, cliff hangers, characters descriptions.

·       Is beginning to borrow bits from books and use it in their writing.

 

White Level

 

·       Is able to read silently most of the time.

·       Is able to sustain interest in a longer text.

·       Wants to return to a book easily after a break.

·       Is able to search and locate information in books e.g. How do you know that the king was a good king?

·       Is able to notice the spelling of unfamiliar words.

     ·       Is showing increased awareness of vocabulary and     meaning of those words.

·       Is able to give reasoned opinions about what has been read.
